prevent unselected dropdown from recording default value

I have a form with several dropdown menus. I have a default value of "SELECT" just to give a user prompt. When the form is submitted, the value of "SELECT" is written into the database and also displays on the tokens for the form response.

Is there a way to have these menus not record anything if they are still on the default value?
