Categories - Restrict View permissions

I wish we can also set Permissions for Categories. Same way as in Products.

We will not introduce permissions on categories for various reasons:

  • Product can be in multiple categories; hence, there's no way to restrict access based on category permissions only.
  • Categories are used throughout the store in Catalog and Widgets (Categories, Navigation, Refine By). Adding another layer of complexity to filtering will lead to performance issues

You can always set permissions on individual products. If you have a use case where you need to restrict many products then consider a separate store (on another page)

OK, can we then have Category not show when it is empty?

Use the visibility tab when managing categories.

You may:

  • Mark a category is active or inactive
  • Show/Hide a category in Categories Widget
  • Show/Hide a category in Navigation Widget

That does not do what I want. I can see client calling or emailing me because the category they expect stuff in is empty, they will not understand. It should be hidden if there is nothing to see

This is a simple admin function. When you create a category, keep it hidden unless you actually add products to it.

We will not automatically hide categories based on product count; that's detrimental to performance. There could be hundreds of categories; each with thousands of products...there's absolutely no reason to check each categories product count simply to decide if we should show the category or not. That decision is left for store manager who's creating the categories in first place.
